The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences is happy to announce that Associate Professor Kate Frederick-Dyer, MD, MRMD, has been named Magnetic Resonance Medical Director.
Dr. Frederick-Dyer is an MRMD certified physician and will use her training to ensure the safety of our patients, faculty and staff.
“I am proud to serve the department as MRMD and help promote MRI safety across our hospital system,” says Dr. Frederick-Dyer.
Director of Body MRI and Medical Director of CT, MRI and VICC Radiology, Dr. Frederick-Dyer was also recently promoted to Associate Professor.
“Kate has been a departmental leader in MR safety, and we are very excited to see her assume the role of MR Medical Director,” says Colin McKnight, MD, Vice Chair of Clinical Operations.
Dan Brown, MD, FSIR, Department Chair of Radiology and Radiological Sciences, is also enthusiastic about Dr. Frederick-Dyer stepping into this role.
“Dr. Frederick-Dyer’s attention to detail makes her an ideal candidate for this role,” says Dr. Brown. “I appreciate her contribution to the safety mission of our department.”
Dr. Frederick-Dyer completed her MRMD certification earlier this year through the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS) and with training from a leader in MR Safety.
“I am grateful for the department's support in my preparation and certification for this role, including sending me to learn from Dr. Emmanul Kanal,” says Dr. Frederick-Dyer. “I am glad that our department is supportive of this additional training, which I believe has helped me to be more confident in my assessment of the MRI safety of the various implanted devices and foreign bodies found in our patients.
“To quote Dr. Kanal, “Saying ‘no’ is easy, but saying ‘yes’ requires knowledge, confidence in that knowledge, and the willingness to say yes and to apply that knowledge.”
Dr. Frederick-Dyer hopes to encourage others to complete this exam through the ABMRS, which offers the MRMD certification, as well as a Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer certification for technologists and a Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert certification for medical physicists.
“I would love to support others interested in this additional training and certification,” continues Dr. Frederick-Dyer. “I am excited about what the future holds for MRI across the VUMC system.”
