Ashish Patel Named Section Chief of Emergency Radiology

The Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences is proud to share that Ashish Patel, MD, MBA, MS, RMSK, has stepped into the role of Section Chief for the Emergency Radiology section, effective immediately. Dr. Patel joined the VUMC Radiology team as an Assistant Professor in 2018.

“I’m excited about the continued growth and collaboration within our section,” Dr. Patel says. “Even more, I’m excited to work alongside the dedicated men and women in our section. Together, we can make great strides toward achieving our 2024 VUMC Pillar goals and initiatives.”

From the department chair to key leaders in operations, many are looking forward to Dr. Patel’s leadership, especially after his successful stint as the section’s interim section chief.

“Dr. Patel is a motivated and energized faculty member who will be a key contributor to this crucial acute care gateway to VUMC,” says Daniel Brown, MD, FSIR, Chair of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences.

Laveil Allen, MD, MMHC, an emergency radiologist who is the Executive Medical Director of Clinical Imaging CSC, sees Dr. Patel’s role as integral to the growth of VUMC’s Emergency Department.

“Dr. Patel has quickly emerged as a highly capable and talented leader among our group of exceptional emergency radiologists,” Dr. Allen says. “As a department, we have successfully developed and maintained a top-tier 24/7 faculty coverage model for our emergency department that far exceeds the national standard. Formalizing the section’s identity under Dr. Patel’s leadership will allow for continued growth around sectional objectives and ready the division for the everchanging demands of acute care imaging.”

Colin McKnight, MD, VUMC Radiology’s Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, echoes Dr. Allen’s sentiment, saying that he’s already proven to be a great leader in the interim: “I am very excited for him to oversee this division on a permanent basis.”

Looking forward, Dr. Patel is focused on enhancing academic opportunities—including national committees, lectureships and mentorship programs—to bridge the gap between the unique subset of emergency radiology and academia. Above all else, he’s looking forward to continue growing relationships with his colleagues at VUMC Radiology.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to work with such a diverse and talented group of individuals, each bringing unique backgrounds, career paths, and motivations,” Dr. Patel says. “Despite the challenges we face, we consistently come together to support one another and most importantly, to provide exceptional care for our patients.”
